Composting Toilets:
The Clivus Multrum is a self-contained, waterless,
odourless toilet treatment system. It uses no chemicals, heat
or water, and has no polluting discharge. It can save over 60,000
litres of water per year in the average home and costs far less than
regular treatment systems. It is based on one of the oldest principles in nature -
simple organic decomposition.

The Following Are Just Some Of The Places Where You Are Likely to Find A Clivus Composting Toilet System:

Waste is collected in the composting chamber on top of a deep bed of carbon rich material such as wood shavings. The ventilation system draws air up through this deep bed and supplies oxygen to the aerobic bacteria, which breaks the waste down to 5% of its original volume. Baffles and air channels in the tank control air flow and this accelerates the composting process.
A gentle flow of air down through the pedestal chute ensures the room stays as fresh as a daisy. The proven design of Clivus Multrum composting systems means no odours, minimal maintenance and they work in all climates. Clivus systems are simple and have no moving parts, no heavy containers to lift, easy access and proven reliability. Clivus are the original and the best.
Clivus Multrum is a wholly Australian owned company with a proven track record. Many government departments rely on Clivus to supply systems for public amenities and amenities in remote and/or environmentally sensitive areas.

Ecolet
The Ecolet range of systems is ideal for low usage applications or for situations where underfloor systems are not suitable. VIROtech generally recommend Clivus systems where possible, as an Ecolet will require a little more attention for the best results.
The Ecolet range is ideal for holiday cabins, boats, granny flats and the like. They are extremely easy to install and are fully approved in all states of Australia.
The ventilation pipe leads moist air away. It also ventilates the entire bathroom so additional ventilation is not needed. The adjustable thermostat combined with the patented, heated air re-circulation results in a very low energy cost. The fan drives warm air through the air channels and under the compost. This provides the compost with a plentiful supply of oxygen and heats it to the optimum temperature for the aerobic bacteria to break down the waste material. The compost cover opens automatically when the seat is pressed down, and closes when you stand.
Finished compost is collected in a tray in the base of the unit and removed as required. Typically, in a household of two people, this tray may need emptying every 2 – 3 months. The contents can be buried in your garden.
Grey Water Systems
Grey water (sometimes called sullage) is the waste water from your laundry, shower, kitchen sink, etc. This must be disposed of in an acceptable way. Our experience has been that, although all N.S.W. local councils come under the same Health Dept. regulations, many of them have their own particular requirements when it comes to grey water disposal, which may vary considerably from shire to shire. In the end, it is usually a matter of sitting down with your local council officer and negotiating a mutually agreeable system.

Most councils are now willing to approve a very simple “greywater only” system for use alongside the Clivus Multrum composting toilet system. At VIROtech we offer advice on what system/s may suit your particular situation with regard to soil types, etc. It is important that you communicate closely with your shire officers to determine the best and simplest system for your particular block.
As the waste from a household comes in three different forms, it makes sense to deal with them in different ways.
Black water - With a waterless toilet installed, you have already taken care of the so-called ‘black water’ by eliminating flushing toilets.
Kitchen Waste - Waste water from the kitchen is low in volume but high in nutrients, and is best disposed of in an absorption trench after passing through a grease trap. A trench only a few metres long may be enough depending upon your block.
Grey water – This is the outflow from the shower, bath, basins, laundry, etc. It is relatively low in nutrients but makes up a large proportion of the total effluent volume. This is the most suitable waste-water for re-use, which can often be done with a simple system.
If your block is suitable, a household grey-water system may be this simple:
- Kitchen waste water is directed through a grease trap and into a small absorption trench, possibly 4 – 5 metres long.
- All remaining grey water passes through the VIROtech pre-filter, then through 50mm poly pipe along a row of trees; preferably well away from the house. Off this main line are 20mm ‘dripper lines’ with a simple 20mm poly tap at the end of each one. These taps enable you to regulate the flow to ensure an even quantity flows from each ‘dripper’. The large diameter of these dippers ensures they don’t block easily. Each ‘dripper’ is placed at the base of a tree and covered with a minimum of 100mm of mulch.
The grey water pre-filter may not be required by some shires. The size, type and location of the land application area will depend on several factors including soil absorption rates, local climate and proximity to water courses and boundaries. Some shires may require a site assessment by a qualified consultant. If you engage consultants, notify them that you will be using a waterless toilet system. They can then calculate the size of the ground application area with this in mind. Using a waterless composting toilet will reduce the volume of household effluent by one third and reduce the biochemical oxygen demand and suspended solids by two thirds.
Holding tanks for grey water are no longer recommended by N.S.W. Health Dept.
